I still live in a big metropolitan area, but only because I couldn't leave, yet. I still have three children in college, and in Brasil, our universities unfortunately do not have a place for the students to live. They have to live with their parents. So, for another 5 years or so, I may be forced to stay in the city. But as soon as I can, I will move to a better place, away from the big centers, which may be a suburb far away or a smaller town.

Quiet area of a city (115.000 people live here), with large green areas and nice hills I can see from my windows.
Exactly the geographical center of Italy.
50 minutes by car or train to Rome, 1.15 to the nearest airport.. just too far from the seaside...

In an area of the north of England officially classified as an AONB (Area of natural beauty), and it is! Nearest village 5k away, nearest other dwelling 500 m away. Hills, sky and water wherever I look. Dark night sky and great star shows. Drawbacks: windy, often wet, often cloudy, often muddy, slow broadband, no mobile signal.

In Warsaw, in a nice, relatively quiet, green and citizen-friendly district, within a walking distance from the city centre; in fact, within a walking or biking distance from almost anything I could possibly need (apart from the airport). Save for weekend wee-hours revellers, I don't see any serious downsides of my current location and can't see me moving out in the nearest future.

I have the best of all worlds. I live 15 minutes from downtown San Diego and the airport, 20 minutes from the Pacific Ocean, and 25 minutes from the Mexican, but the neighborhood, Tierrasanta, is referred to as "the Island in the Hills" because access is limited. My particular area is full of mature trees and my house is half a block from our park.
