But...
With a view of peaks to the west
at the silent end of a secluded cul-de-sac
surrounded by greenery and caressed
by the occasional whistling of gentle winds -
This translator bustles away in envied silence

I don't quite live in the back of beyond, although to city-dwelling visitors it can seem that way. The nearest village/small town ('pueblo' covers a multitude of sins...) is a brisk half hour's walk away. It's only half of that on a bicycle, but it's downhill, so on the way back I tend to take a more roundabout route taking at least twice as long.

I am at the edge of a village with a population of 400.
In the autumn I can often see deer and wild turkeys feeding in the overgrown apple orchard.
And, as regards the Goldilocks zone, this summer a bear found the cache of bird seed stored (foolishly) on our porch, and it came back a couple of times looking for more.
No asphalted road, no sewage system, no connection to the public water system, no rubbish collection, not even a telephone landline, let alone cable or fiber.
A few other houses around, though, and most importantly, a bar 5 minutes away by bicycle, handy when you forgot to buy bread or milk in town.
Nearest village at 15 min driving, 30 min bicycle-riding, 40 min running and 1h30 walking.
Airport 45 minutes, Mediterranean, Atlantic and ski resort at about 2h30 driving.<... See more No asphalted road, no sewage system, no connection to the public water system, no rubbish collection, not even a telephone landline, let alone cable or fiber.

Away from Stuttgart but central that we have 15 mins to the airport for our private jet, 20 mins to Stuttgart city centre 10 mins to the next "large city" and 5 mins to the motorway which you can only hear when the wind is blowing in the wrong direction.
Oh, and flight path for landing / taking off for Stuttgart airport is also above our back garden, but I am immune to that now, except if a Galaxy or 747 happens to land.

Downtown suburb | Oct 23, 2016 |
I live in the center of Herlev, a suburb 10 km from Copenhagen,
4 min. walk to a nearby park,
Regional train station 12 min. walking distance
Lots of busses in all directions and 45 min. to the airport by train/subway.
And 10 min. walk to the regional hospital | | | Thayenga גרמניה Local time: 14:35 חבר (2009) מאנגלית לגרמנית + ...
I live in a quiet side street in the former and present capital of Germany. Peace and silence are a given here, yet it's centrally located, 5 walking minutes to several stores, subway and bus stations. Only the two airports - though located within the city limits - are some 40 - 50 minutes away by car. | | | Was tempted to say the back of beyond... but is is a small town | Oct 23, 2016 |
It is a small country town with water on three sides - from the window I can see a fine view across the bay when I stand up. We say we have the front door in town - five minutes' walk from the school and the first supermarket, ten to fifteen minutes' walk at most from the rest of the town. Back door in the country - there is a deep gully with no buildings on it, where our son and his friends used to play up in the trees, but the thickets of elder bushes and the climbable trees have been cleared,... Back door in the country - there is a deep gully with no buildings on it, where our son and his friends used to play up in the trees, but the thickets of elder bushes and the climbable trees have been cleared, and it is now largely nettles and brambles. There is real country with woods and fields to the north and across the bay.
Twenty minutes' drive to the airport, half an hour to a larger market town or a whole hour to the city. There is another large town an hour away where it is a lot easier to park ... I prefer to take the bus if I am going to the city. I rarely need to, however - the main industry is tourism and the local shops cater well for everyday needs. I tend to do my big shopping in England when on holiday, and everything that can go over the Internet does so! ▲ Collapse | | | Ana Vozone Local time: 13:35 חבר (2010) מאנגלית לפורטוגזית + ... I am very fortunate to live in Cascais, a suburb of Lisbon (30 min. by train) , population approx. 206,000. I live some 100 yards from the wooded area on the left of the photo. Cascais is a beautiful place, very "touristy", but one can still have a quiet life living only a 5-minute walk away from the center, like I do...

I thought I'd better respond as it's my poll! I think, way back when I submitted this, I was wondering whether translators were more naturally loner types who live further out from civilisation, but I guess just as many of us live in towns and cities than any other profession. We are one of six houses down an unmade track in the middle of farmland. But civilisation is not far away! I live in Coyoacan in Mexico City... the street is quiet, it's a nice neighborhood, but with how big MC is, not much closer to anything in particular than anywhere else! 😂😂😂 (Let's say 1 hr to the airport).
Though one day I'd love to move back to Frenchtown, NJ. A very small town in the middle of nowhere... but Jersey standards, at least! | | | דפים בנושא: [1 2] > | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: Where do you live?
