I have been contacted, hired and retained by several clients via Proz.
A couple of them have been with me from the beginning and are still with me now.

But, as mentioned by colleagues, all by means of the directories. I never got a single job from the Job Posting list, and every time I got a reply, it was for peanuts. I haven't replied any job announcement in over a year. Yet, participation in the KudoZ forum and a good position in the directories does render many clients.

A few of my very best clients found me via ProZ.com;
- and one I got by responding to a job ad. I did not get the job, but they kept me on file and contacted me later.
BTW: All of my best clients (4-5 agencies) pay reasonable rates.

Hi all,
The poll results shown include both, but of respondents who are or have been paying members, 69.7% report having met long-standing clients through ProZ.com.
In contrast, just 27.9% of respondents who have never been members have met long-standing clients.

Jared, nice try, but this kind of statistics is flawed. If you want to be reasonably objective, you need to correlate not only these two variables, but also translation experience in years, listed rates, KudoZ scores, overall online activity, etc. - essentially, as many variables as you can attribute to a user, otherwise you are liable to confuse cause and effect.

The most effective means to get clients in ProZ is the search directories. That's where the good clients look for translators. These directories place the paying members first. Next, you have to participate in the KudoZ forum and make many points. Once your name appears on the first page of the directories, you'll have to refuse jobs, because you'll receive too many e-mails, and you won't be able to accept them all.
Now, if you are a non-paying member, you'll depend on the job offers you apply to. And even if you are a paying member, but you don't help your colleagues in KudoZ, it will still be hard to compete. So it's very clear that there are people who participate actively in KudoZ and get many clients, and answered "yes" to this question; and people who don't participate in KudoZ and are skeptic and/or critical about it, and answered "no".

Mario, I am not a paying member and I don't apply for one-time jobs posted on the job board - I only respond to postings for long-term collaboration by well-reputed companies, maybe once or twice a month, always quoting a rate slightly higher than my then-current standard rate (this way, I gradually adjust it upwards). Following your logic, I am not supposed to be in a position to refuse extra work, yet I get as much work as I want, and more. 80% of my workload comes from 5-6 large clients, and ... And they are some of my best clients. They provide me with regular work all year long.
I haven't always been a paying member, but I was when I got those 2-3 clients.
But I don't remember if it was them who found me or if I applied to a job ad.

I have never had any clients through Proz, neither as a paying nor as a non-paying member. I do get the occasional enquiry, but they tend to be outside my field of expertise or ridiculously low paying. Interestingly, I do seem to get as much, if not more enquiries, since I lapsed my membership...
