And I am not planning to join one
I did join one, but left again, because it seemed to consist of certain people bragging about how great and successful they were. That doesn't appeal to me one little bit.
Edited to add: I might have misunderstood the question - the group I'm referring to was on Facebook.

I am never 100% sure of what the term means. I briefly joined LinkedIn some years ago, but found its continual messaging rather spammy, so cancelled my membership, or so I thought. However, I still get messages and updates from LinkedIn on one or two of my less frequently used email accounts. Apart from being able to see what colleagues, friends or acquaintances are doing, I never really saw much point in it.

Not really sure what this means.
Sounds like a glorified excuse for having a few pints with some mates at the local

I believe I still have an account on LinkedIn and Xing, neither has been useful. Especially the "job offers" on Xing are...astounding. All such offers are apparently strickly not related to the translation business. Why would I be interested in becoming the assistant of a medical researcher or help some professor carry around his papers?

Just a simple 'no', it's not because I don't believe in them or because I never thought about it.

I understood the question as referring to international groups such as BNI, not social media networks or groups.
I was once invited to a BNI breakfast for a new chapter and attended, not really knowing what it was. I decided against joining- the attendance policy is too strict (basically making travel impossible, when extensive and spontaneous travel is one of the best advantages of the freelance lifestyle), and I don't meet or even interact with nearly enough people on a daily bas... I decided against joining- the attendance policy is too strict (basically making travel impossible, when extensive and spontaneous travel is one of the best advantages of the freelance lifestyle), and I don't meet or even interact with nearly enough people on a daily basis to be able to plug other people's services, nor does that really appeal to me. I've read accounts of other translators who have participated in BNI and have found it useful for networking, though.

I'm a member of Linked-in for I don't know how long. The only and exclusive benefit of the site for me is to keep a complete+ CV availablle for other people, so I can just send the my Linked-in link for that purpose. It has never been useful for anything else. When I was unemployed, I never received a single reply from any company, although I replied hundreds of announcements. Other than that, the other features offered make it identical to FB or Twitter.

I also use ProZ for networking purposes, and that has been working just fine, although it may not be the primary purpose of the site. ▲ Collapse

My only active network is the ProZ.
Not sure what's meant by networking. I'm on LinkedIn, and I'm in still touch with colleagues from when I worked full-time. They send me work, and I send them work. I would never recommend anyone whose work I haven't seen.
