French term

adhérence/adhésion

French to English Social Sciences Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
It is a text talking about the construction of identity:

"Elle représente une sorte de dialectique entre 'l'adhérence' et 'l'adhésion'. La première désigne cet héritage dont chacun de nous est porteur, ce patrimoine, mais dont on peut aussi être prisonnier, tandis que la seconde est l'ensemble des choix que l'on peut faire, mais pas aussi librement qu'on l'imagine."

I'd appreciate any suggestions for "adhérence" and "adhésion" in this sentence.

"belonging" (adhérence) and "joining " (adhésion)

I'd keep the inverted commas (given the scope for interpretation) but itmight be like a heritage/culture situation, we "belong" to the latter because it is something "fixed" that is handed down, while culture is something that evolves through influence, so there is scope for opting in.

Not sure how much sense this makes!

Just to say that this suggestion is based on looking at heritage at a given point in time; in the longer run culture will add to heritage in a \"stock-flow\" way (with heritage being the stock and culture the flow).

Should be \"belong to the former\"

"belonging"/"choice of belonging"

"choice of belonging" is often used when it comes to religion and gender issues..

agree Veronica Coquard : To sum up "choice of belonging" how about "conviction"

"given (or inherited) identity" / "chosen identity"

Just another shot. I agree with Monika's idea of "choosing" for the second part.
Good luck!
