I must be really old now since I seem to be the only one here who remembers high school days when we dansed in socks in the gym (in order not to damage the floor).
"how low" is probably a reference to the limbo dance where you wiggled under a stick held horizontally by two persons and being lowered all the time. "How low can you go?" was a line of the accompanying song.
