Discussion

casey Sep 22, 2006:
I was having a hard time putting it into words, but the answerers below pretty much hit the nail on the head. It's a common phrase, but I doubt you'd find it in a dictionary.
Cecile Senaux (X) (asker) Sep 21, 2006:
I didn't know it could mean "put up a fight". It makes more sens now! thanks!
casey Sep 21, 2006:
Not exactly. I would guess from what you are saying that he is saying, "That's what we'll have to do." 来なくちゃ is the spoken form of 来なければなりません. 来る means literally "to come," but it can also be used to mean "put up a fight."
Cecile Senaux (X) (asker) Sep 21, 2006:
Context It's in a fantasy novel, in a battle scene.
A young officer says "we have to go back and protect the general", and an old soldier (who always want to protect the officer) answers "そう来なくちゃ"
Does it help?
casey Sep 21, 2006:
Can you provide the conversation? At least the line before?

That's what I'm talking about !

Although "そうこなくちゃ" literally has the meaning of "come", it is also a common phrase that is used to express excitement about the actions of another individual (often living up to or exceeding expectations).

You might also translate this as:

That's the spirit!
Now we're talking!

Now you are talking! or That's what I want to hear!

そう来なくちゃ literally means "That's what I want to hear", my second suggestion.
