Thanks, Joe. That's exactly what I was wrestling with as well.
Joe L Nov 11, 2006:
...is referred to? Of course, your sentences don't refer to any
'third tier". And as I type this, I see Yo is now weighing in with
an answer. Good luck. (Take a peek at this re my conjecture
on 'memory'.)

Joe L Nov 11, 2006:
...out on a limb, but what the heck. Is this "hardware" referencing
'memory' hardware? (Now here's where I REALLY embarrass myself),
could 初期 be RAM, 中期 be hard disk memory, and then external
memory be whatever the third, most permanent tier...
Joe L Nov 11, 2006:
The same thing came to my mind, but I didn't have the confidence
(or guts) to move on it. I thought 初期 could possibly mean
"first generation". But then what would 中期 be? "Second
generation"??? Another 'notion' I've had will stick me even
further ...
casey (asker) Nov 11, 2006:
It's possible. The next sentence is さらにこの20年間はコンピュータのソフトウェアを活用した基礎・応用教育と開発研究に従事した。

research for the hard development (of Japanese computers) from the early to middle years

Here is my stab at this:

The author is involved with research for the hardware development of Japanese computers from the early and middle years.

I believe this is talking about the history of the development of computers and in more particular the history of Japanese computers.

I am not certain but translating "hardware" may not be necessary here...

Here is a link which describes the history of computing hardware:
There are several referenes to "early" computers.

Also, although this is not related to computers specifically, here is a link which refers to "初期・中期" as "early to middle years".

Hope this helps...
