Law (general)
(Wikipedia http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filmauswertung says it's the same as Filmverwertung. vor which Leo http://dict.leo.org/forum/viewUnsolvedquery.php?idThread=134... suggests exploitation - is that right?)

film receipts | film revenue | film industry turnover
In the context provided the word Filmauswertung appears to refer to sales volume in the film industry. In effect, the value of the computer and video game industry has outstripped the film industry in sheer volume.

: More specifically, cinema revenue (see "Filmauswertung im Kino" indicated in asker's context, as opposed to e.g. revenue from DVD sales).

In this context the words cinema and film are largely interchangeable, as it is the end-product of the film industry that is obviously being compared -- namely, what people receive as entertainment in film theatres. Thanks!

box office receipts
I agree with Hamo and Steffen et al that this is the money taken in at the cinemas, as opposed to DVD sales, toys, etc. The correct term, however, is box office receipts.
"UK and Ireland box office receipts totalled £840.35m during 2005, a marginal rise on the previous year."
(from the Guardian) - http://film.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/Guardian/0,,1688123,00...

Example sentence:
All amounts are in USA dollars and only include theatrical box office receipts (movie ticket sales) and do not include video rentals, television rights, etc.
Comparison of box office receipts: It should be noted that a film's box office gross is only one measure of its success.

: Yes, box office receipts would also be very appropriate, but I would not insist that it is the only suitable term in this context.

Thanks. I wasn't trying to upstage you, Hamo. Since the context here was "Filmauswertung im Kino", I still think it's just about the proceeds at the box office. But your translation was right on the money for the term "Filmauswertung" per se!

box office statistics
'Auswertung' implies more than just revenue/turnover/receipts. It includes parameters like the number of new releases, ticket pricing, top 10 (or say, top 20) films of the year, annual growth rates - to name a few - apart from revenue/turnover/receipts
