German term

Lautiermethode

German to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy
"Verwendung der Lautier- sowie Buchstabiermethode"

Methods used for teaching people to read and write. These seem to be commonly used methods but I'm not sure of the English equivalents.

some Wicki info

Peer comment(s):

agree Kim Metzger : Stephani's method of teaching children reading and writing by teaching them the sounds the letters mark, however self-evident it may seem to us today, was in fact a discursive event of major proportions.

Background info - not for points

I just wanted to add this info in support of Jonathan's phonetic method:

But orality is not merely a dream, it is a technological reality: the reforms initiated by the Bavarian school official Heinrich Stephani (1761-1850) produced this orality as an effect of didactic procedures. Stephani's method of teaching children reading and writing by teaching them the sounds the letters mark, however self-evident it may seem to us today, was in fact a discursive event of major proportions. It produced not merely a new conception, but a new and effective organization of linguistic materiality.

Complete Description of the Genetic Writing Method for Public Elementary Schools , Heinrich Stephani, (1815); The book attempted to abolish (as did his phonetic reading book) an old cultural technique of imitation in order to transform it into psychologically motivated, self-initiated activity (p. 81).
