CGagnon Apr 6, 2002:
How can one translate the title of a poem without at least a sense of its content?
Gayle Wallimann Apr 6, 2002:
You should post this as an instant job.

Soul on sole

Val Klopfer, a senior at Maginn and a member of the girl\'s basketball team, wears a WWJD bracelet and also wore one on her sneakers during basketball season.

\"When I\'d look down [at my shoes], Jesus was always there,\" she said. \"If you have faith, you can get through anything. It was a reminder to be a good sport. Win or lose, I wasn\'t going to quit.\"

This reminder was particularly important during the Class A semifinal game against Albany High School. Val scored 11 of her team\'s 20 points during the fourth quarter, including three free throws in the last 27 seconds of the game, which helped close Albany\'s lead to three points. In the end, the school lost 57 to 52.

\"Everything happens for a reason,\" Val said of the game. \"That\'s how Jesus wanted it.\"

This is just a suggestion. Maybe you should translate first the whole poem and then the title, because it seems to be metaphoric and choosing the translation of the title depends on the contents of the poem.

Une âme à semelles

Declined
This is a poetic way of using homonyms to say that somebody with a soul, "une âme" is walking or at least on foot "à pied". The choice of the word soul for the person is to show that he has a heart and is sensitive.
You asked for an explanation in English...
Here it is in French:
C'est une façon poétique d'utiliser des homonymes pour dire une personne (une âme) est à pied (à semelles). On a dû choisir le mot âme aussi pour montrer que cette personne à du coeur et de la sensibilité.

Of course I haven't. I don't understand why you said that, my answer was just trying to help the person. Didn't know she was the author, just guessing why the use of these words.

We have in French the expression: avoir l'âme dans les talons. that would suit the other line shuffling shoes so I suggest : l'âme dans les talons
