German term

Publikumsmedien

German to English Marketing Media / Multimedia
As opposed to Fachpresse. Consumer press? Embarassingly enough, I'm not sure what the term for "normal" media is! ;-)

Thanks a lot!

Hilary.

Discussion

Steven Sidore Jul 13, 2007:
One final note: interestingly, I learned as an editor that book publishing does often juxtapose specialty books with general-interest ones--but that's specific to book (and journal) publishing, and does not apply to the rest of the media world SFAIK
Steven Sidore Jul 13, 2007:
[cont] Publikumsmedien include BOTH the genre of the gen.-int. publication/broadcasts/etc AND subject-specific pubs/broadcasts written to be comprehensible to a general public. (Kicker is an example of the latter: specific subject, non-specialist writing)
Steven Sidore Jul 13, 2007:
@Brigitte: (had to put this here, no more room in my comment below). The question isn't whether Spiegel falls within the Publikumsmedium (of course it does), but whether general-interest press is broad enough to convey the German term. I say no, because
Hilary Davies Shelby (asker) Jul 13, 2007:
The context is: "Anzeigen in Fachpress und Publikumsmedien". ;-) Helpful, I know ;-).
Francis Lee (X) Jul 13, 2007:
Context, please! ;-)

popular press

Usually you talk about advertising for either the trade or the popular press.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I was torn between this and mass media, but in this context I needed a counterpart to "trade press", and this fits nicely. Thank you all!"

general-interest press, consumer press

Note from asker:
Thank you for your answer, Brigitte! I think Steven is right, though - popular media can be divided into general-interest and special-interest, where special interest is still distinct from "trade". This applies particularly to magazines.
Peer comment(s):

agree Steffen Walter : Ich dachte auch zuerst an "general-interest press/publications".

Danke schön, Steffen.
disagree Steven Sidore : I believe that general-interest is a genre of popular press--publications like The NY Times or Der Spiegel that are broad but not deep, versus popular press publications or broadcasts that explorer a specific subject--i.e. Kicker magazine (football)

Any proof for this belief? According to you, "Kicker" is a "Publikumsmedium" but Der Spiegel isn't? Into which category does Der Spiegel belong? I am not sure that you understand the German expression correctly.
neutral Francis Lee (X) : w/ Steven. "general-interest press" is not the counterpart of the "trade press". His example is a good one IMO.

consumer media

Rather than press. Could include Internet as well, where they do call them Anzeigen. Covers you for all eventualities.
