As far as I know, the "U" refers to units of rack space (at least that's how one of my clients uses it). (So it should probably fewer rather than less.) See the following examples:
Because of the growing number of various Rack Server based multi server configurationsup to server farms, 19" rack technology becomes more and more important. The spacesaving rack technology is available in 24, 38 and 46 units high (U) plus 6 U, respectively 2U in case of the 24 U rack, for supplying parts.
"La necesidad de una protección en línea rentable dentro de esta región es muy significativa", opina Sam Atassi, Director Regional de Tripp Lite en Latinoamérica. "Al proporcionar 3000VA en tan solo 3 unidades de espacio en bastidor, el modelo SU3000RT3U será la envidia de los fabricantes de sistemas UPS de la competencia, quienes sólo pueden ofrecer unidades físicamente más grandes y menos poderosas.
