Spanish term
el rumor de los barracones
Spanish to English
Art/Literary
History
This is from the life story of a Jewish painter who was imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp:
En tan siniestro lugar y en tan severo desempeño conoció a Rebecca, también prisionera en Plaszow, de quien se enamoró y con quien contrajo matrimonio en una liturgia clandestina que se celebró en el rumor de los barracones.
This expression seems strange to me, any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Since this was a clandestine celebration, there could not be a lot of hoopla and loud expression of excitement. Therefore, it was kept down to a murmur.
Of course "murmur" is another meaning of "rumor":
Oxford
"rumor: (murmración) rumor; (sonido) murmur"
"el rumor del agua / viento: the murmur of the water / wind"
"un rumor de voces: murmur or low hum of conversation"
