Spanish term

el rumor de los barracones

Spanish to English Art/Literary History
This is from the life story of a Jewish painter who was imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp:

En tan siniestro lugar y en tan severo desempeño conoció a Rebecca, también prisionera en Plaszow, de quien se enamoró y con quien contrajo matrimonio en una liturgia clandestina que se celebró en el rumor de los barracones.

This expression seems strange to me, any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Spanish term (edited): en el rumor de los barracones
Selected

amidst the murmur of the camp huts

i.e. in some secret corner, with low-key life going on all around
Peer comment(s):

agree David Ronder : Yes - and I'd definitely go with huts not barracks. There's a fair amount of murmuring in Jewish liturgy, and I think there's a suggestion of clandestine liturgical murmur mingling with the low-level background noise of camp life.

Since this was a clandestine celebration, there could not be a lot of hoopla and loud expression of excitement. Therefore, it was kept down to a murmur.

Of course "murmur" is another meaning of "rumor":

Oxford

"rumor: (murmración) rumor; (sonido) murmur"

"el rumor del agua / viento: the murmur of the water / wind"

"un rumor de voces: murmur or low hum of conversation"
