Period this is set in? That seems rather modern to me. If the author had meant a cycling jacket he/she would probably have used a more modern word.

It would be helpful if the asker could provide us with a bit more context as to the period this is set in (from the choice of words I imagine something along the lines of Miss Marple or so)...
