Dear colleagues,
could anyone explain to me who is Czech Prime Minister, Jan Fischer, referring to in the introduction to his speech at the Chamber of Deputies when he says:
"Vážený pane předsedo, vážený pane předsedající, ..." ?
The whole excerpt is as follows:
"Projev předsedy vlády ČR ve Sněmovně
Vážený pane předsedo, vážený pane předsedající, vážené poslankyně, vážení páni poslanci, ..."
I have to say that I am rather confused who is "předseda" and who is "předsedající"? Would anybody be able to explain this to me? I have tried to research it but so far, I have only been able to answer half of the "question". I believe that by "předseda", Fischer refers to "předseda Poslanecké sněmovny" (am I right?) but who is "předsedající" and how would you translate the two into English????
Thank you!!!

Note from asker:
Dear Hannah, thank you very much for your answer. It seems that there is quite an agreement on your translation. I did my own research straight after I had posed this question and have to say that I have arrived to the same conclusion. Nevertheless, it can be still quite confusing since one finds reference to the same person (předseda) as Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies and Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies but then using Chairman in this particular instance would then pose difficulties in addressing the "předsedající" in English.... Thus, I believe that Speaker is more appropriate in this particular context. Would you agree? As regards the translation of "vážený", I have come across both expressions "dear" and "esteemed" within a parliamentary context. I was glad to see that you, too, Hannah, have wanted to use "esteemed" but were unsure whether it would not mean going a bit too far. I am thus very glad to have Michael's opinion and see that we would all agree on adressing all as "esteemed" :o) Do I understand it right that the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies is more of a permanent function (for a lenght given by the election) while the Chairman holds its post only for the particular session/meeting? |
Dear Hannah, I apologize. Please ingnore the questions that I have raised in my last note. I have just discovered a whole discussion on the topic of my entry (as above) which provides confirmations to some of my assumptions. Thankyou!! |

: I agree with the titles, however, I would suggest using "Esteemed Speaker" rather than "Dear Mr. Speaker", which sounds rather too informal, given the context.

Thank you so very much. I wanted to use exactly that, and I hope Myska reads this. Indeed, it should be very formal, fitting the place and occasion. Frankly, I was afraid to go that far....

: Dívala jsem se na internet a dear Mr. Speaker se často používá. Klidně bych vynechala název sněmovny v oslovení, protože se jedná o projev, a ty lidi jsou osloveni přímo, bez uvedení názvu istituce
