A 'fee earner' is a qualified solicitor at a firm for whose time the firm charges. The amount they charge doesn't go direct into their pockets - it goes to the firm. They are then paid a (usually) very handsome salary.

neutral Jack Przybylski : This comes definitely late, but in US law firms, where I've worked for 15 years, a fee earner is not necessarily a lawyer. Could just as well be a legal assistant or a trainee. "Personnel juridique" might do the job, depends on the context.
