O termo originalmente se referia a uma casta de escravos que os árabes tomavam de seus pais para criar e adestrar em suas ***casas-criatórios***, onde desenvolviam o talento que acaso tivessem. Seriam janízaros, se prometessem fazer-se ágeis cavaleiros de guerra, ou xipaios, se covardes e servissem melhor para policiais e espiões. Castrados, serviriam como eunucos nos haréns, se não tivessem outro mérito. Mas podiam alcançar a alta condição de mamelucos se revelassem talento para exercer o mando e a suserania islâmica sobre a gente de que foram tirados.

I think here is more in this sense of bringing up, CRIAR, like we do with our own children/people. Of course, the type and standards of education that was given to them, and the development of their unique talents, would vary and accordingly would raise different kind of people.
