are trapped Explanation: http://buscon.rae.es/drae/?type=3&val=cultura&val_aux=&orige... I believe the meaning reflects being stuck or trapped. Sure escape is theoretically possible... though not likely. Mired is the best of the choices I see although it sounds a bit archaic at least in the US. I do not think immersed is negative at all, actually it is usually used for positive experiences such as foreign language acquisition. "Find themselves" sounds the best out of the 3 other choices, but it does not convey the lack of upward mobility that so many experience. http://www.amazon.com/Trapped-Poverty-Chronic-Remote-Tribal/... |

find themselves Explanation: "immersed" and "mired" could be seen as overly negative in this context, so it may be better to go with a more neutral translation... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2013-02-25 01:20:33 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Re Ray's suggestion, "find themselves trapped in" is certainly an option, but I would still go for a more positive tone than "trapped" alone. |
