What does crying do for a politician’s standing with colleagues in the hardened world at Westminster? Next time he or she stands at the Dispatch Box, might they all start going boo-hoo?
Next time he or she has to go into negotiations with, say, Russia’s distinctly unhuggy Prime Minister Putin or one of those human waxworks from Peking, will it help create an aura of statesmanship around the British representative if the foreigners know he is prone to doing a Stan Laurel at the first sign of disappointment? I suspect not.
Sir Winston Churchill was no stranger to the odd lachrymose moment, particularly after a magnum or two of Pol Roger. He suffered from ‘black dog’ depressions.
However, he kept pretty quiet about that side of his character when he was leading our country during World War II. It would not have been good for morale had the public pictured Churchill sitting in a tearful puddle while Goering’s Luftwaffe dropped their bombs.
