I'm looking for a translation of this phrase. This is quoted as a hadith in the source text. I have found this link with what appears to be the full text (http://aldiwanonline.net/ProductDisplay.aspx?ProductID=28&Ca... but I haven't found any site with both the Arabic and the English. All of the hadith search sites that I know of can only be searched in Arabic OR English, but you can't pull up translations unless you know exactly which hadith you are looking for and what book it's in. Does anyone have a hadith translation resource?

يَا عَلِيُّ، إنَّ هَذا الدِّينَ مَتِينٌ فَأَوْغِلْ فِيهِ بِرِفْقٍ وَلا تُبَغِّضْ إلى نَفْسِكَ عِبَادَةَ رَبِّكَ فَإنَّ المُنْبَتَّ – يعني المُفْرِط – لا ظَهراً أبْقَى وَلا أرْضاً قَطَعَ. فَأعْمَلْ عَمَلَ مَنْ يَرْجُو أنْ يَمُوتَ هَرِماً وَاحْذَرْ حَذَرَ مَنْ يَتَخَوَّفُ أنْ يَمُوتَ غَداً.
“O Ali! This religion is strong; therefore enter into it with gentleness. Do not make the worship of your Lord hateful for yourself, for the one who has fatigued his mount and is unable to continue his journey – that is, the one who is excessive - has neither a riding animal nor can he travel.. Therefore act as one who hopes to die in old age, but be cautious with the caution of one who is afraid that he will die tomorrow.

A common saying taken from the hadith below to refer to anyone who shows excessiveness:
And do not cause the worship of your Lord to become hateful to you. For the one who traverses it harshly will neither reach (his goal) nor will it spare anyone.

إن هذا المقطع من الحديث يستخدم فيه المصطفى صلى الله عليه وسلم البلاغة اللغوية للتنفير من التشدد وتحميل النفس والجسد ما لا يطيق.
فقد شبه المستكثر من العبادة ليحصل التقوى بالمسافر الذي لا يتوقف وشبه الجسد بالراحلة (وكنى عنها بالظهر كمجاز مرسل حيث أطلق الجزء وأراد الكل) وهي وسيلة السفر، والعبادة بالأرض التي يقطعها المسافر والتقوى وهي الهدف من العبادات المختلفة بالمدينة التي يود المسافر الوصول إليها.
ولما كان إنهاك الدابة هو تدمير الوسيلة ومانع من الوصول للغاية فهذه الترجمة توضح الهدف من التشبيه والله أعلم
