German term

Erfahrungswelt

German to English Other Military / Defense
Bitte, helft mir das Wort ins Englische ubersetzen:

29. Januar 1933.

Danke!

Discussion

Horst Huber (X) Jan 29, 2014:
"Experience" plain and simple, is what Michael Oakeshott called, "Experience and its Modes", It seems "terms", "perception", "field"will fall into place or get dropped, once you know how to render "entrücken" and "Geschehen".

perception of reality

"Removed/divorced from our perception of reality, the black and white images conjure up a strange (sense of) detachment."

Or:

"Conjuring up a strange (sense of) detachment, the black and white images escape our perception of reality."

I think this about how we experience events through the lense of our perceptions and how far removed they are from how people perceived events in bygone eras. Compare with how "perception of reality" is used below:

"The worlds and places that Borges creates in Labyrinths are fantastical to say the least. The worlds are so for removed from our perception of reality that at times they seem impossible, or at the most improbable." http://essayrock.blogspot.com/2007/11/labyrinths.html

"The only difference is that the "fast as the speed of light" media brings us all of the gory details, and reading dusty old books about what went on before us, without moving pictures, etc. leaves stories too far removed from our perception of reality to care." http://forums.superherohype.com/showthread.php?t=241714&page...

realms of contemporary experience

I suggest: "The black and white images appear strangely remote and far removed from the realms of contemporary experience."

agree Frosty : Indeed, realms - perhaps also with 'practical'?

lending (these) events an ethereal/dreamlike quality

and now for something really different

Just to clear things up:

These black and white images conjure up/engender a curious detachment, lending those events an ethereal/dreamlike quality.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Yorkshireman : Different indeed - I have yet to see seemingly dreamlike and ethereal documentary films of "The Third Reich" andWWII. Neither a lender nor a borrower be :-) Context?

German term (edited): unsere Erfahrungswelt

our own familiar world

A different approach, ditching 'Erfahrung' but retaining 'Welt'. It is understood that you cannot inhabit a 'world' without experiencing it. Or to quote Macka: "This ever-changing world in which we live in"

Some options with experience:
our own field of experience
our own lens of experience
our own scope of experience
our own stream of experience
our own sphere of experience
our own horizon of experience
our own store of experience
