It is extremely risky to automatically assume this has anything to do with any form of 'camshaft' (as in an I-C engine, for example) — there are no clues to suggest this in the source text as given, which is why it is really VITAL for Asker to give us proper context. For example, many kinds of programming device, e.g. in automatic dispensing machines or washing machines, traditionally used cams to control various functions.
'Camming' could refer to the simple notion of 'controlling things by using cams'.
