Please read this before putting up "Black One" as the answer...
So, the main character becomes known as a Черный Демон (his actual race is a demon in a LitRPG for those who are familiar with the genre, though it could just as easily apply in other fantasy settings). It is a mark of great power in this world, so when other characters refer to him as such, it denotes respect.
The problem is, as any English native should immediately recognize, the literal translation sounds utterly ludicrous in English. I'd been using "Dark One" as a placeholder, but I'm not happy with it, especially since it may lead to confusion as there are light and dark races in the book.
Any creative suggestions are very much appreciated.

Comment: "To be honest I went with my placeholder in the end, so I'm grading this for being the most "creative" answer. Though if Rachel had put her suggestions as an answer, I would have had to go with her. This was a really tough question to answer precisely because you guys don't have the overall context, knowledge of existing hierarchy, etc. But thank you everyone for trying."

Dusky
Or maybe even Dusky-san, is there's something Japanese themed about this thing? Personally, I like Dusky, which sounds very organic for a name in English, but it is probably not respectful enough, hence the "san" part.
Other things to think of: Obsidian, The Somber One, or maybe even Raven? Definitely not Ebony - you know why. Not Joe Black either.
Of the Dark? Just like that, capitalized. Dark as Night? Apparently, there's even some kind of a music act by that name, if that's of any help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aA-8LiRcdlU
Naturally, all of this is pure speculation.

Archfiend/Dark Lord
If it is a sign of repsect the literal translation of Черный as Dark or Black can possibly be replaced with something as menacing but sounding as a title.

Discussion

And there seems to be a writer named Kim Richardson whose books are populated with "higher demons".
https://www.google.com/search?tbm=bks&q="Higher Demon"
So, the character is part of the demon race, so that part is nothing special. These black demons are special, however. Here's an explanation from the text:
"Высшие – это те, кто смогли совладать с проснувшейся в них истинной кровью. Редко, очень редко она в ком-то просыпается, но еще реже тот, в ком она все-таки проснулась, может обуздать свою ярость и не превратиться в чудовище. Полностью черным в боевой форме становится только высший."
So, essentially, think of being a высший as a higher caste, with greater strength and abilities. And being called a черный is an honorific because these units transform in combat into an especially fearsome all-black form.
Of synonyms not containing the word "black" (like "coal-black," etc.), would any of these be possibilities? - sable, ebon, ebony, midnight, inky, raven; and, some synonyms of dark: darksome, night-mantled, tenebrous, shadowy.
