French term

la spirale vertueuse du don fait

French to English Art/Literary General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters In A Book About Collective Intelligence
Contexte (description of interaction among group members who are promoting each other's success):

3 - Savoir donner avant de recevoir

Le mastermindien « idéal » :
Comprend qu’il vient pour donner au moins autant que ce qu’il va recevoir. Il sait aussi que la spirale vertueuse du don fait qu’il recevra, tôt ou tard, des bénéfices extraordinaires du groupe. Il comprend qu’il s'enrichit d’autant plus en adoptant la devise « l’autre d’abord ».

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Carol Gullidge

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

the virtuous spiral / circle of giving means ...

"Virtuous spiral" and "virtuous circle" are really synonymous. Both are used in English. "Virtuous circle", like "vicious circle", is probably a bit more common, but some say that "virtuous spiral" is better because it implies ending up higher than where you started. Anyway, if they use spiral, you might as well do the same. As you prefer.

"Du don" is literally "of the gift", of course, but I think a gerund, "of giving", works better in the context.

"Fait" belongs to what follows; "fait qu'il recevra" means "means that he will receive".
Peer comment(s):

agree Tony M : Yes, totally agree, especially with the gerund point. In essence, it is the notion of the positive aspect of "what goes round, comes round" (positive karma!) or "pay it forward" in modern jargon.

Exactly. Thanks, Tony!
agree Nikki Scott-Despaigne : Yes. Quite a common image in economics, altho' vicious/virtuous circle are better known, thanks to Keynes. Spiral different as upwards motion, thus improvement.

Thanks, Nikki. Interesting point about Keynes. I've nearly always heard/read/used circle; spiral seems to be used more in US.
agree Nathalie Stewart : Very nice rendering!

Thank you very much, Nathalie!
agree Carol Gullidge : Agree entirely - actually this isn't rocket science. And that "fait" should be removed from the header term before glossing
