talibalismo

español al inglés Arte/Literatura Modismos / Máximas / Dichos
This is from a text about an Argentine photographer:

Thanks!

Charles Davis Jan 14, 2018:
I agree "Fanatical devotion" seems just right to me. I think "talibalismo" carries connotations of absolute zeal, bordering on the irrational. I don't think the idea of fanaticism is too extreme for the context; tastes in art can be fanatical. After all, it's the origin of "fan".
Robert Forstag Jan 14, 2018:
"Fanatical devotion"? Maybe in the present context of photographers who are passionate about their profession, "fanatical devotion" or something similar might work.
Charles Davis Jan 13, 2018:
Not always It's colloquially used for dogmatic fanaticism in various contexts:

"Ser talibán de", applied to a brand, can mean being a fanatical devotee of it.
philgoddard Jan 13, 2018:
I think it may mean iconocolastic It certainly does in this article, which is about the Taliban blowing up statues:

Peer comment(s):

agree Robert Forstag : I would go more for “fanaticism,” but I do not think the difference from your answer is great enough to warrant a separate entry.

Thanks Robert! Fanaticism about photography sounds just a bit excessive to me., as though they went about defacing French photographs :)
neutral philgoddard : You haven't given any references, and I don't think this is the meaning.

I await with interest any alternative suggestion that makes sense in the context.
agree Charles Davis : Yes, I think the idea is fanatical love for (implicitly to the exclusion of alternatives)

Thanks, yes, but again, to me "fanatical" sounds a bit over the top in English.
