I think this means 'indirectly' or 'online'. Or could it have something to do with referral? Do you agree?

@Hi Muriel I read the part where it's mentioned as referring to "sensitization", but I thought the same as you, i.e., probably an observer understanding this word from the standpoint of what he or she gleaned from what this actually meant in the real world. I can't fathom how it's meant to be a euphemism for compelling people to comply with malaria eradication measures. Having said that, your text is from Paraguay isn't it? It's quite possible it doesn't mean what I've suggested at all, though I can't imagine what from your text. Do you have any other context, Muriel?
I found another document, this time with a Brazilian URL from the UN, about combating diseases, including malaria, where canalizar is used the way I've suggested, if that helps at all:

@Ana and Robert I was so interested in the book that Ana cited that I read what I could of it online and ended up ordering a copy. That said, I'm not entirely sure the author understood the use of the word. In the end, he's an outside observer (Harvard professor of history), not a malaria specialist. http://www.ppghcs.coc.fiocruz.br/index.php/en/faculty/131-en... At first I thought he was Mexican because he was writing about Mexico, but after reading his bio I realize that's probably not correct. The book, by the way, is rather inflammatory though written in sophisticated academic language. Basically, he's saying that the war on malaria was never intended to eradicate the disease but rather to throw a bone to poor people so they wouldn't rise up and become communists. And to sell DDT (made by Bayer). He's currently writing a book about my alma mater, the World Health Organization. Interesting to say the least.

@John Hi, I've just looked up "canalizar" in the ColMex dictionary (http://dem.colmex.mx) and it's not there either, although this definition may be a link in its evolution:
2 Dirigir o encauzar dinero, trabajo, etc, hacia un fin específico: canalizar un mayor volumen de recursos hacia la producción agropecuaria, canalizar convenientemente las inversiones, canalizar sus inquietudes hacia las artes plásticas

I've heard it used this way in speech, although I don't remember seeing it that often, if at all, in documents.
Having said that, here's an example of its use in Mexico:
"Antonio Trespalacios Guerrero, titular de l Coordinación Estatal de Atención a las Adicciones, dijo que se trabaja para seleccionar a cuatro centros privados de atención a personas con problemas de adicción, con el fin de atender a la gente que por orden de un juez sea canalizada a recibir tratamiento médico o psicológico, de acuerdo a la nueva Ley contra el Narcomenudeo."

I follow your logic and it's probably the way I was trying to "understand it", but I am still failing to find a Spanish definition for "canalización" that would give that concept. As you note, it may be a Mexican usage, not covered in general dictionaries?

In response to John's comment, the way I understood it was 37,606 homes were visited by going house to house and that 801 homes were visited as a result of referrals, whether through word of mouth on the doorstep or using health records, or some other referral mechanism.

Some additional context probably would help to figure this one out.
