French term

peu spécifique

French to English Medical Medical (general) PET scan
Hi,

The sentence is the following: "Persistance d'un hypermétabolisme modéré à intense mais diffus du côlon droit, peu spécifique"

Not sure what is the correct translation for "peu spécifique" in this context

Thanks

Joanna

Discussion

Lorraine Valarino Jan 27, 2019:
After reading the comments on this thread and taking a second look I agree with writeaway that peu does not equate to mal. 'Not very specific' is more the intended meaning.
Lorraine Valarino Jan 27, 2019:
If that is the case then the term to use is ill-defined.

e.g. There is an ill-defined hypermatabolic nodule/infiltrate in the right middle lobe
joanna menda (asker) Jan 27, 2019:
Thanks, however in this instance it is "peu specifique" and not "non-specifique" which is used in another line. How would I mark this difference. Thanks.
Lorraine Valarino Jan 27, 2019:
In medical parlance, "non-specific" (often spelled "nonspecific" in the medical world) means not due to any single known cause, and alternatively, not directed at a particular agent but having a general effect.

not very specific

PET-CT is sensitive in showing primary neoplasic processes in the intestine but is not very specific due to physiological uptake and inflammatory causes.

This enhancement cutoff of 15HU resulted in an excellent sensitivity of 98% but unfortunately it was not very specific for malignancy, only about 50–60% [39]. The general conclusion based on this report was that benign lesions usually enhance no more than 15 HU...

High-resolution CT (HRCT) scanning is used for detection of lymphangitic carcinomatosis. CT scan findings are not very specific, since nodules can be seen in a variety of benign conditions, including granulomas, hamartomas, and vascular abnormalities.

as it is a PET scan, "ill-defined" could also be OK
Peer comment(s):

agree writeaway : yes, peu can't be ignored and certainly never means not/none at all or "ill".

Thank you writeaway :-)
neutral Barbara Cochran, MFA : No need to express the idea in a way that is this verbose.

agree Jennifer White : IMO this would also work. A three word answer is not exactly verbose(;-)

non-specific

Meaning it could be of a certain kind, but about which it is difficult to make an exact determination.
Note from asker:
Thanks Barbara! As I mentioned above, this is "peu spécifique" and not "non spécifique" which the author uses in another instance ("topographie non spécifique"). Is it still the same?

could peu spécifique in the source sentence mean "not precisely or accurately defined" ?
