assise d'élévation

French to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering Archaeology
Hello all,
This comes from a description of excavations of an abbey in France. Not sure what assise d'élévation means. Some sort of base? Grateful for any help.
Ce mur conservé sur une assise d’élévation, s'arrête côté ouest sur le piédroit (partie latérale) d'une ouverture dont l'autre piédroit est aménagé dans un mur accolé à l'angle du cellier.

Marco's suggestion of course of masonry stones sounds convincing to me. Thanks.

@ all I wonder if it is not the height per se of the wall but the number of layers excavated. I mean a part of the wall might still be buried

Marco Solinas Jun 3, 2021:
To Asker I am quite sure that "assise" is a course (range) of masonry (stones, bricks or whatever material was used). You have probably already seen this: https://www.btb.termiumplus.gc.ca/tpv2alpha/alpha-eng.html?l... (record 4) However, I am not sure about the "élévation" bit. I suspect that they are saying that only one course (range) of masonry of the wall survives, but I was unable to find references that would corroborate this.

elevated foundation

Or raised foundation:

A raised foundation is the physical structure of the footings and walls or piers that support the home to create the crawl space.

Please note: low confidence and the fact that construction is not really one of my main subject areas.

French term (edited): assise d\'élévation

a base of elevation

I think we are talking about the foundation of the abbey, the base for any elevation.
