O que é uma nascente?
Para um comum e bom entendimento teórico e prático a respeito é indispensável recuperar uma definição conceitual indiscutível: toda nascente corresponde a uma manifestação em superfície da água subterrânea, entendida essa como a água contida em zona subterrânea de saturação, normalmente sustentada por uma camada geológica inferior impermeável. (A propósito, cumpre registrar a confusão terminológica que se estabeleceu entre as expressões água subterrânea e lençol freático, hoje comumente utilizadas como sinônimas. Em termos corretos, o lençol freático corresponde à superfície de separação da zona de aeração, superior, da zona de saturação, inferior, ou seja, corresponde à superfície hidrostática da água subterrânea. Porém, talvez seja melhor rendermo-nos á realidade e informalmente aceitarmos a referida confusão terminológica estabelecida).

Especialmente a partir da formulação e da aplicação da legislação ambiental protetora de mananciais a questão da definição teórica de uma nascente e de sua identificação e interpretação exata em campo apresentou-se como uma demanda frequente
