Discussion

Frank Szmulowicz, Ph. D. May 25, 2022:
@Anton: You make valid points. One can be righteous in non-religious context (characterized by, proceeding from, or in accordance with accepted standards of morality, justice, or uprightness), too.
Anton Konashenok May 24, 2022:
I am not against appropriation of the word, but its suitability should at least be verifiable by backtranslation, and "righteous" is most frequently translated into Russian as "праведный" (adj.), "праведник" (n., a holy man, or a man without a sin).
Frank Szmulowicz, Ph. D. May 24, 2022:
Some terms ought not be borrowed: for example, "Holocaust" means "burnt offering" but is inextricably and uniquely associated with the fate of Jews in WWII and should not be appropriated for other uses, tragic as they be in their own right. However, Yad Vashem's use of "righteous" (acting in an upright, moral way; virtuous), on the the other hand, may be appropriated for other uses, even if they do not reach the elevated standards of heroism and sacrifice of the Yad Vashem honor. The question of whether "good" or "righteous" sufficiently convey the meaning and impact of the phrase is a question that I leave to my colleagues.
Anton Konashenok May 24, 2022:
What Kasparov et al. are proposing is somewhere on the boundary of "non-support" and "direct opposition": a mere written commitment to some ideas with no requirement for any kind of active stance on that. Whichever way we call it, it's a loooong way to righteousness as it is understood by Yad Vashem.
Frank Szmulowicz, Ph. D. May 24, 2022:
Here, Gary Kasparov describes the document

This is one description of the ID and the process for obtaining it:

Good Russian ID (or along these lines)

Righteous Among the Russians Certificate (Identity Document)

This is a certificate for Russians who are opposed to the war against Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea and the Donbas region, and consider the war and the Russian government to be criminal. In some proposals, it may serve as an ID.

I styled this answer on the Righteous Among the Nations Certificate issued by the Holocaust Memorial in Yad Vashem honoring non-Jews who at the risk of their own lives help Jews during the Holocaust.

Persons recognized as a "Righteous Among the Nations" are awarded a specially minted medal bearing their name, a certificate of honor, and the privilege of their names being added to the Wall of Honor in the Garden of the Righteous at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. Read more about the commemorative sites.

The awards are presented to the rescuers or their next of kin in Israel or in their countries of residence through the good offices of Israel's diplomatic representatives. These ceremonies are attended by local government representatives and are given wide media coverage.

Very kind of you, Lesia.
disagree Anton Konashenok : Sorry, can't agree, this is a gross exaggeration of the idea in question. It's not an award by any stretch, merely a recognition of the person not supporting the current regime and its ideas. A bit like lustration certificate in Czechia or Poland.

We can disagree about the translation but we must be clear as to the meaning. The document is not a recognition of nonsupport but of direct OPPOSITION. Opposition is an active, principled, moral stance; non-support is mere by-standing.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer.
