English term

hard pass

English to French Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters Slang expression
This noun phrase is slang. Formally, we would just say 'no thank you' but with friends we can reject their ideas by giving it a 'hard pass'. The verb we use with it is 'give'. Give something a hard pass.

c'est mort

Plusieurs options mais pour m'en tenir à une qui pourrait fonctionner selon le contexte et correspond à l'idée de "hard", je choisis celle-ci.

Par exemple, si je suis tranquille chez moi, fatigué et qu'il est tard et qu'on me propose d'aller quelque part (et pire si c'est loin), c'est ce que je répondrais : "C'est mort, sans moi"/"hard pass"

C'est un 'non' catégorique

If the register fits. But all this helps Fabrice with his BBC online homework! (See comment below)

faible probabilité / difficile d'obtenir un accord

Au regard du contexte fourni, il s'agit d'une façon polie de dire "non" ou de montrer que les chances sont très minces.
