French term

liaison

French to English Science Mathematics & Statistics scientific article
Hi,
I am currently translating a journal article and under the heading "Rappel sur les Coefficients de Concordance" I have the following:
"Il faut noter que la concordance est un concept bien différent de la liaison ou corrélation"
What does "liaison" mean in statistics?
Thanks
Joanna

Discussion

Hi everyone,
The author gave me this explanation: "dans le second cas nous cherchons à mesurer la relation entre deux variables tandis que dans le premier il est question de mesurer la concordance entre observations par rapport au différents temps"

Linkage, maybe?

dependence

"Etude simultanée de deux variables X et Y définies sur une même population P : mettre en évidence une éventuelle liaison (relation, dépendance) entre les variables"

"Qu'est-ce que la corrélation ?
La corrélation est une mesure statistique qui exprime la notion de liaison linéaire entre deux variables (ce qui veut dire qu'elles évoluent ensemble à une vitesse constante). C'est un outil courant permettant de décrire des relations simples sans s'occuper de la cause et de l'effet."

"Correlation and Dependency. Aren’t They One and the Same?
For those starting out in analytics, it can be quite confusing to understand the underlying difference between the terms ‘Correlation’ and ‘Dependency’. In statistics, when we talk about dependency, we are referring to any statistical relationship between two random variables or two sets of data. Correlation, on the other hand refers to any of a broad class of statistical relationships involving dependence. Let us further define these two terms:

Dependency: A variable whose value depends on the value assigned to another variable (independent variable).
Correlation: The relationship between two or more variables is considered as correlation. The correlation coefficient always assumes linear relationship regardless of whether that assumption is correct or not."

So, dependency means that there is some relationship between the variables that you are studying (could be positive, negative linear etc.), whereas correlation assumes that the dependency is linear. Just because a correlation test does not give a good result does not mean that there is no dependency.

neutral Mpoma : Why did you put "dependence" rather than "dependency"? Your last 3 quotes all use "dependency".

Linkage

A linkage function is an essential prerequisite for hierarchical cluster analysis . Its value is a measure of the “distance” between two groups of objects (i.e. between two clusters).

Algorithms for hierarchical clustering normally differ by the linkage function used. The most common type of linkage functions give rise to the following algorithms for cluster analysis:

Data scientists and others use clustering to gain important insights from data by observing what groups (or clusters) the data points fall into when they apply a clustering algorithm to the data. By definition, unsupervised learning is a type of machine learning that searches for patterns in a data set with no pre-existing labels and a minimum of human intervention. Clustering can also be used for anomaly detection to find data points that are not part of any cluster, or outliers.

The concordance is defined P(xi > xj|yi > yj), the probability that the prediction x goes in the same direction as the actual data y. A pair of obervations i, j is considered concordant if the prediction and the data go in the same direction, i.e., (yi > yj,xi > xj) or (yi < yj,xi < xj).
