English term

diamond in the rough

English to Italian Other Idioms / Maxims / Sayings
The full phrase is "He's a real diamond in the rough."

Is there an equivalent idiomatic expression in Italian? I've found "E’ un vero cuore d’oro sotto una ruvida scorza." but don't know how common/easily understood that is.

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I asked a lot of Italian friends and they said they'd never heard this expression used to describe a person "un diamante grezzo" but under the circumstances I think it's the closest equivalent...grazie a tutti!"

Your translation is perfectly understood! You can also say "E' un burbero benefico". Anyway I prefer yours
