became a professor / was appointed a professor (context)

The German is faulty. I suspect they mean either:
1) ist Professor für Psychologie geworden ("bekommen" mistakenly used for "become" by non-native!)
- or -
2) hat eine Professur für Psychologie bekommen (was named/appointed professor for psychology)

The larger context should make clear which is correct.

to be awarded the academic rank of professor

is what it means. I´m not sure if there is a shorter way of describing this
Peer comment(s):

agree Will Matter : to become or be appointed a professor.

was promoted to professor

Peer comment(s):

agree Michael Schubert : If variation 2) under my entry is the correct intended meaning, then I think this answer "promoted to professor" is the most elegant and accurate!

agree Will Matter : Also correct.

neutral Francis Lee (X) : sounds too German ("promoviert" is not "promoted")

Did the text say "promoviert"? Did I say "promoviert"? Nope
neutral Ian M-H (X) : People aren't often directly promoted to professorships. Usually it means moving to a different university and it's not unusual for someone to move from one chair to another, so it's not always promotion to a higher position. Otherwise this would be okay.

was awarded a 'chair'

OK This sounds archaic and very, very British but there are plenty of B/W films where the hero muses on this possibility after the War is over!
Peer comment(s):

agree mstkwasa : It is still a big thing for many vainglorious profs to have the Chair...

agree Francis Lee (X) : this is how I understand it

agree Ian M-H (X) : but without 'square quotes'
