The trick is to get the base for the tripod head exactly
level. By this, we mean the platform the tripod head
screws into. Now you can use the spirit level on the
platform itself if it’s flat, but you can also use it on the *centre column*. In fact, if you ‘level’ the centre column
instead, you don’t have to remove the tripod head.
First, measure the front-to-back ‘verticality’ of the
centre column facing in the direction of the ‘front’ leg.
Now adjust the side-to-side tilt by adjusting the ‘side’
legs. You can use one of those little hotshoe-mounted
spirit levels for this.
