Dutch term

Passend onderwijs

Dutch to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy
Is there a (semi) official English term for this? Or if not, what would you think it should be?

Discussion

Michael Beijer Oct 18, 2013:
if anyone is still following this... I wonder what the best way to translate 'Wet Passend Onderwijs' is?

Wet Passend Onderwijs
• aangenomen oktober 2012.
• gaat in vanaf 1 augustus 2014.

Here it is: https://zoek.officielebekendmakingen.nl/stb-2012-533.html?zo...

so far I have come across:

Inclusive Education Act (or Act on Inclusive Education)
Appropriate Education Act (or Act on Appropriate Education)
Tailored Education Act (or Act on Tailored Education)

I am partial to 'Appropriate Education Act' myself.
Textpertise Jul 16, 2009:
I definitely need more context I am looking at three suggestions. I don't know which of them to agree with unless I know what we are talking about and where this education is taking place (i.e. home or school). Please can you supply some text which indicates why (or even whether) the pupil or student falls outside the mainstream educational system.
geenstijl (X) (asker) Jul 15, 2009:
What I found was not correct, so I reopened the question. I found 'inclusive education' as a translation for it on numerous websites. But later on in the text it says: "Passend onderwijs is dus niet hetzelfde als inclusief onderwijs, maar hoogstens een eerste stap in de richting van deze inclusie."

What did you find? What did you find. Please let us know-you can enter your term in the glossary.

Tailored Education

'Passend' here means 'op maat'. In my work for an education policy organisation, I have previously translated this as 'Tailored Education' to the satisfaction of the client. You can also read on the passendonderwijs.nl website that:

-> "Passend onderwijs staat voor maatwerk in het onderwijs. Voor elk kind en iedere jongere onderwijs dat aansluit bij zijn of haar mogelijkheden en talenten. Geen kind tussen wal en schip dus."

agree Tina Vonhof (X) : In NA more likely referred to as 'individualized instruction' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Individualized_instruction).

Thanks, interesting link. Could be some mileage in this.

special education

No context, but this may be a suitable option. Special education for students with 'special needs'.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Chris Hopley : This is 'speciaal onderwijs' in the Netherlands or 'buitengewoon onderwijs' in Flanders, and is not what is meant by passend onderwijs; see Tina's ref.

neutral Michael Beijer : agree with Chris

Student-centred education can be used for any student at any level. It means the curriculum/ programme is tailored towards the abilities and interests of the student or small group of students.

7.1 The concept of ‘appropriate education’
Since 2007 education for pupils with a physical, intellectual or mental handicap should be ‘appropriate’, in Dutch: passend onderwijs. The policy aims were explained in a letter of the State Secretary of Education to Parliament(State Secretary of Education, 2007 June 25).

SEN ("Special Educational Needs) pupils will be integrated in accordance with the Dutch legislation on the integration of students with disabilities
("Passend onderwijs"), which offers comprehensive guarantees

A new concept has been developed; instead of special education (speciaal onderwijs) the policy document speaks of suitable education (passend onderwijs).

etc. The WWW should help clarify it. Depends on the context, but as none is provided.......
