Shelter books are natural venues for the trading-up audience, but Nolen says they could do more to address these readers. Many shelter magazines have trouble breaking into luxury accounts because they have such a high rate base and advertisers fear the demographics will be too watered down. But Nolen thinks publishers can make the case that as trading up becomes more popular, these mass-circulation magazines will be an efficient way to reach consumers who are ready for luxury brands.
