RODUCT CATEGORY DEPENDENT CONSUMER PREFERENCES FOR ONLINE AND OFFLINE SHOPPING FEATURES AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON MULTI-CHANNEL RETAIL ALLIANCES

The relative salience of such favorable and unfavorable features when comparing online and offline shopping
options undoubtedly varies across products, consumers, and situations. For example, “high-touch” products such as
clothing and “low-touch” products such as airline tickets clearly differ in this regard. “High-touch” products are
those that the consumer requires the ability to touch or experience before buying (Lynch, Kent, and Srinivasan,
2001).
In contrast, “low-touch” products are those that are standardized and do not require inspection to evaluate
quality.

TOUCH AND VIRTUAL TOUCH
Physical products can be classified as either “low touch” or “high touch” (Peet 2000). Low-touch products can be
accurately represented, for purposes of evaluation over the digital medium, by very short descriptions, frequently
by specifying the values for a small number of attributes or options. They include commodities (such as steel,
wheat, sugar), pizzas, most packaged groceries, many consumer appliances and new cars. In the jargon, these
products are easily “commoditized”. High-touch items are more complex, idiosyncratic or unfamiliar items whose
quality and utility is difficult to evaluate without physical handling and inspection, and are therefore more easily
sold in the traditional mode that allows proximal experience of them. They include specialized foods and
beverages, fashion garments, rare collectables and used cars. Finally, the value of a product is important as it
determines the risk associated with an erroneous utility evaluation.

Definition of: high touch

http://www.pcmag.com/encyclopedia_term/0,2542,t=high touch&i...
Dealing with a human being instead of a computer screen or voice response system. The term was coined in the early 1980s by John Naisbitt in his best-selling book "Megatrends." Naisbitt pointed out the fallacy of automating every business transaction without human interaction at some point. There is no substitute for "the personal touch." Contrast with high tech.
