Este termo, apesar de não aparecer evidente no texto é o que se subentende, principalmente por haver algo chamado "resource curse" traduzido como "maldição dos recursos naturais" ou "paradoxo da abundância", sendo o 'carbon curse' uma teoria posterior à esta, como diz este artigo:

"The carbon curse is a new theory, related to but distinct from the resource curse. It states that fossil-fuel rich countries tend to follow more carbon-intensive developmental pathways than [if they were] fossil-fuel poor countries, due to a hitherto unappreciated syndrome of causal mechanisms."
