"Field flashing" is simply the momentary application of a small DC current to the field windings, in order to initially excite the generator. You can use 2 D cells, a 9 volt transistor battery or any other source of low DC voltage/ current to do this. It is safer for the field windings to have the machine turning when this is done, this method also lets you see a brief voltage out of the unit if the "flash" is successful. The "Flash" switch is not a new innovation, I had a 1960's vintage military set that was equipped with such a device, it placed starting battery voltage on the field via a current limiting resistor"

What is 'field flashing'?

Electrical generators that are self excited depend on residual magnetism in the field to start generating. If the residual magnetism has been lost, it may be restored by briefly applying power from an external source. The brief application of power for that purpose is called "flashing the field." Flashing is sometimes done manually to start a small generator. An automatic flashing circuit can be designed to use a battery which is disconnected and recharged once the generator has been started.
