mola carregada/pressionada

I'm sorry, gladbird. Sometimes we get carried away! A coiled spring is one which has been "wound up", that is, loaded with energy, and it is ready to release this energy. The context suggests that the people "around him" are charged with energy about something and are very tense, ready to release all that energy like a coiled spring.

all the people were very tense

There was a kind of suppressed tension in the air that you could sense. People were on edge, almost as if ready to explode.

A coiled spring is one that has been wound up and is full of tension.

Perhaps people could sense that something unpleasant was about to happen.
