French term

CNDP (Commission Nationale du Débat Public)

French to English Other Government / Politics
" .... ***la commission nationale du débat public (CNDP)*** doit être saisie pour toute création ou extension d’infrastructures portuaires ..."
Before starting this translation I was, I confess, completely ignorant of the existence of this august body, which strikes me as being exquisitely gallic.
Does anybody know of an equivalent in an English-speaking country, apart from the obvious translation (National commission for public debate ...) ?

Discussion

Michael GREEN (asker) Mar 16, 2008:
I just came across a reference (in French) to the US, Italy and Australia setting up their own "CNDP"s for GMOs, which would provide an "official" translation (or 3 alternatives ?!) if I could find the English web sites concerned ...
Michael GREEN (asker) Mar 15, 2008:
Yes, I think your suggestion of "national public hearings commission" is the best solution so far, and I expect I'll run with it, but I'll follow the rules and wait 24 hours !
CMJ_Trans (X) Mar 15, 2008:
To be honest, I tend to use "Hearings" rather than "Debate" in cases like this. It sounds more "English" to my ear. There are other "Commissions" in France for railways, etc. and they use the term a lot
Michael GREEN (asker) Mar 15, 2008:
Thank you gabuss - good point.
gabuss Mar 15, 2008:
"débat" est synonyme de "séance" en matière politique et juridique et le Dico Collins/Robert le traduit par "proceedings" ou "debates". Je vous laisse le choix néanmoins
Michael GREEN (asker) Mar 15, 2008:
Sorry ! Hadn't seen your answer when I added my note.
Michael GREEN (asker) Mar 15, 2008:
That seems just what I'm looking for, CMJ : would you care to post it as an answer ?
Otherwise you won't be in the running for any points ...
;)
CMJ_Trans (X) Mar 15, 2008:
National Public Hearings Commission ?
Michael GREEN (asker) Mar 15, 2008:
Thanks for that rapid response, gabuss.
The function of the CNDP is to organsie public debate (publicly-aired pros and cons about a project), so I'm not sure that "proceedings", while not inappropriate, is strictly accurate here.
gabuss Mar 15, 2008:
"National Commision for Public Proceedings" will be better, I think

In the wake of the public debate
conducted by the Commission
Nationale du Débat Public (National
Public Debate Commission) between
January and May 2006,

But it is somebody's translation and the author may not even be English mother tongue.....
Note from asker:
Another web search comes up with http://www.entretiens-europeens.org/publications/lettre1GB.pdf, whose translator went for the easy option : "National Committee for Public Debate (Commission Nationale du Débat Public)" - which shows once again that web hits are not necessarily a reliable guideline.
Peer comment(s):

agree gabuss : "National Public Debate Commission" sounds well

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you all for your contributions - I have decided to retain CMJ's suggestion, but the decision was not easy !"

National Public Consultative Council

Not an English equivalent (I don't think there is one) but this is the sort of name that would be used if UK did this (we do it on a smaller scale with "focus groups" etc.)
Note from asker:
Thank you. That is certainly a possible option. I'm reticent about the use of "council" in this context, since the CNDP is a "commission", whose functions are somewhat different.
