hollow cough
I've certainly heard this term - and it seems about 7 or 8 times as common on the web as toux creuse

True - but it is still used today - mostly I've found examples in homepoathic medicine e.g. https://www.fernsvitamins.com/vitamins/MBi/expectorant.html
abd it's also mentioned in this advert for wellbutrin (burptoprion) http://www.word-bank.com/wellbutrin/
This seems to indicate it is still a recognised term - though how you translate it will obviously depend on your context. As a pharmacist, I'd be happy with 'hollow cough' - if a patient described that to me, I'd know what they meant.

What was used by Jane Eyre does not necessarily fit in with a medical translation today. |
Thank you, Chris. |

cough with chest retractions / intercostal retractions
Creuse - L'inspiration s'accompagne de signes de rétraction intercostale, sus et sous-sternale. On observe un battement des ailes du nez. On dit que l'enfant "creuse" pour respirer.
Intercostal retractions are also known as chest retractions, which are mostly noticeable in coughing children due to the structure of their chest - the areas below the ribs, between the ribs, and in the neck sink in as a child inhales (breathes in). This "sinking in" is associated with the literal "hollow" meaning of creuse.

: The "sinking in" in your reference is on an inhalation, but coughing can only be on an exhalation!//See my reference comment.

And yet "toux creuse" only seems to appear in the specific context of respiratory disease in the child: "toux creuse" and intercostal retractions also appear here: http://publications.msss.gouv.qc.ca/msss/fichiers/guide-gard...

Sound of the cough
These references seem to use "toux creuse" or "tousser creux" to the sound made by the cough, which could be heard by anybody, and not to a physical hollowing out that might be seen and described by a doctor performing a clinical examination.

: That's my understanding too. It's a cough coming from the chest rather than the throat which sounds 'hollow'.

Thanks Penny. Yes, it's descriptive of the sound, and that can then be used in diagnosis.

Discussion
Come across abbreviation - cba which I assume is chronic bronchitis and asthma
Productive cough perhaps fits the bill.
Just been to pharmacy where I live in France, she can give me references for all sorts of "toux" but not "creuse".
