Discussion

Bashiqa (asker) Jul 4, 2019:
@ All i`ve sent doc to client with list of queries, this being top of the list. I suspect its use is very local, hence no entry in GDT. I`ll wait for client to get back to me. In meantime I`ll continue with my own very productive cough and go to the doctor`s.
B D Finch Jul 4, 2019:
@Liz That's very weird, because I can find nearly 2000 examples:https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q="toux cre...
liz askew Jul 4, 2019:
The weird thing is I can find no examples of toux creuse on the net!!
B D Finch Jul 3, 2019:
@Bashiqa Surely "avec secretions colorees" covers it being a productive cough? So, "toux creuse" is additional information about what it sounds like.
Bashiqa (asker) Jul 3, 2019:
@ All Bit more info.
Come across abbreviation - cba which I assume is chronic bronchitis and asthma
Productive cough perhaps fits the bill.
pennylyd Jul 3, 2019:
toux creuse et souvent productive https://hvdseigneuries.com/la-toux-de-chenil/
Bashiqa (asker) Jul 3, 2019:
@ All no sign of toux creuse in GDT.
Just been to pharmacy where I live in France, she can give me references for all sorts of "toux" but not "creuse".

hollow cough

I've certainly heard this term - and it seems about 7 or 8 times as common on the web as toux creuse

True - but it is still used today - mostly I've found examples in homepoathic medicine e.g. https://www.fernsvitamins.com/vitamins/MBi/expectorant.html
abd it's also mentioned in this advert for wellbutrin (burptoprion) http://www.word-bank.com/wellbutrin/
This seems to indicate it is still a recognised term - though how you translate it will obviously depend on your context. As a pharmacist, I'd be happy with 'hollow cough' - if a patient described that to me, I'd know what they meant.

I meant buproprion of course! Trying to do two things at once.

Any references to support this answer? Thanks, Chris.
What was used by Jane Eyre does not necessarily fit in with a medical translation today.
Thank you, Chris.

cough with chest retractions / intercostal retractions

Creuse - L'inspiration s'accompagne de signes de rétraction intercostale, sus et sous-sternale. On observe un battement des ailes du nez. On dit que l'enfant "creuse" pour respirer.

Intercostal retractions are also known as chest retractions, which are mostly noticeable in coughing children due to the structure of their chest - the areas below the ribs, between the ribs, and in the neck sink in as a child inhales (breathes in). This "sinking in" is associated with the literal "hollow" meaning of creuse.
Peer comment(s):

neutral B D Finch : The "sinking in" in your reference is on an inhalation, but coughing can only be on an exhalation!//See my reference comment.

And yet "toux creuse" only seems to appear in the specific context of respiratory disease in the child: "toux creuse" and intercostal retractions also appear here: http://publications.msss.gouv.qc.ca/msss/fichiers/guide-gard...
agree El Mehdi Hakkou : This definitely fits more. "Hollow cough" as a medical terminology is very uncommon
