Druckmanometer

German to English Tech/Engineering Engineering: Industrial Gas supply systems
Given that a Manometer is a pressure gauge, how is it possible to distinguish between a Manometer, a Druckmanometer and a Kontaktmanometer in a document where all three are mentioned?
I realise that it is possible to use the word manometer in Engish too, but I'm not clear on the difference between these two/three types.

Obviously, "contact pressure gauge" is fine for Kontaktmanometer, but if Manometer is a pressure gauge then Druckmanometer seems problematic, unless I go back and change every instance of pressure gauge back to manometer, in which case I really would be cussing, saying "oh manometer!" ;)

Inconsistent writing Quite a few (German) authors love to use different terms for the same thing, because they think variations on a theme makes their texts more interesting. I have come across this phenomenon quite often in the past, and a check with the customer or author confirmed my suspicion.

It is not difficult to use the same term "pressure gauge" for all occurrences of "Druckmanometer" and "Manometer" by replacing all corresponding items (easy and quick with Word and similar to copy and paste)

Instead of "inventing" a new term ... ... for Druckmanometer when "pressure gauge" is the standard term for both Manometer and Druckmanometer (which are basically identical, and Druckmanometer is redundant if manometers are used for measuring pressure and nothing else), why don't you try to convince your customer or proofreader that there is just this one single term in English for both German terms? That would be the neatest solution (IMHO).

pressure gauge

A Manometer measures nothing else then pressure (normally). So Manometer is a pressure gauge and Druckmanometer is identically.

A Kontakmanometer is also a pressure gauge, but equipped with contacts additionally.

Many techniques have been developed for the measurement of pressure and vacuum. Instruments used to measure pressure are called pressure gauges or vacuum gauges.

A manometer could also be referring to a pressure measuring instrument, usually limited to measuring pressures near to atmospheric. The term manometer is often used to refer specifically to liquid column hydrostatic instruments.

Zu: Manometer; Druckmanometer; Kontaktmanometer

Hallo David,
habe jetzt - ausgehend von Johannes Links - eine ganze Zeit recherchiert und bin zu dem Schluss gekommen, dass Du, um sicherzugehen, nicht um eine Rückfrage an der Kunden herumkommst.

Meine erste Vermutung war in Richtung "Differenzdruckmessgerät". Es kann aber auch um den Unterschied "pressure gauge" zu "vacuum gauge" gehen.

Oder aber (je nach Auslegung der dt. Begriffe) kannst Du in Richtung "pressure sensor; pressure transducer" gehen.

Ich empfehle Dir auch das Dokument zu "Pressure Transducers" (http://www.barksdale.com/faq/PT-04_97.pdf", wo es auf S. 5 um "absolute pressure sensors" und "gauge pressure sensors" geht.
