Discussion

Shane London (asker) Mar 28, 2006:
While proofreading the document I realised the service in question was given a few lines above the expression I was querying. It is 3908 H3 PSA Gesamt. I guess that is a PSA test.
Ford Prefect Mar 27, 2006:
If you can't get any help from the client then cover your ass with a query in your report.
Shane London (asker) Mar 26, 2006:
The line above the one in question says :Wünschleistung nach Paragraph 12(1) SGB V but I think that is in addition to the 'heiberufliche Leistungen'.
The invoice holder is a long way removed from me. The document is part of a large number of medical reports and invoices coming from an insurance company who has gone through an agency that has passed the documents to me for translation. Lodging queries can be a bit difficult when working through an agency. I think I just need to find an acceptable term for (steuerfreie) heilberufliche Leistungen.
Kathrin.B Mar 26, 2006:
As your invoice is an incoming invoice there must be an offer/order or might be a contract with rthe details, what the purcaser wanted. Asking the invoice holder about the service might be a much simplier way to get to know what the invoice is about. HTH
Kathrin.B Mar 26, 2006:
Hi Shane, tax excempt health care services are generally listed in the national law on VAT or you can find a/some codes by which in a so called national service code you can find what sevices belong to that. These are not only medical and/or dental s...
Shane London (asker) Mar 26, 2006:
As the word 'steuerfreie' is part of the text, isn't this talking about tax exempt professional medical services under the Sales Tax Law? James' suggestion for 'heilberuflich' makes sense to me as 'tax exempt' is already part of the text.

health care

I would translate the whole thing as tax-exempt health care services; there are numerous hits for tax-exempt health care on google.

agree MMUlr : It covers a broad range of services - here the original law (see § 4 sec 14): http://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/ustg_1980/__4.html

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thankyou very much for all suggestions and comments. Tax exempt health care services seems to be the way to go for the entire phrase I am looking at. "

medical/dental treatment

The 'Heilberufe' (in Germany) are physicians, dentists, psychologists, homeopathic practitioners, probably chiropractors etc.

Peer comment(s):

agree Paul Merriam : Another alternative is to call them "services" rather than "treatment".

neutral Kathrin.B : Not all medical/ dental services are tax exemp. The phrase "heilberufliche Leistungen" would cover only the exempt services.

The question was only for heilberuflich, the asker knows he has to translate 'steuerfrei' also.

German term (edited): heilberufliche Leistungen

health care achievements

It would depend on the exact context but I would have translated this as "health care achievements" or "health care service". There is an implication within the word "Leistung" of achieving something or delivering a service.

Andrew

Note to Kathrin, I would imagine the phrase requested "heilberufliche Leistungen" is subject to a great degree of interpretation - hence it is qualified as "Steuerfrei". On its own, there is no implication whatsoever that "heilberufliche Leistungen" refers only to tax-exempt services.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Kathrin.B : Not all medical/ dental services are tax exemp. The phrase "heilberufliche Leistungen" would cover only the exempt services.

In that case, the English translation needs to contain an exhaustive list of all exempt services - do you have a list to help the asker?
agree Hilary Davies Shelby : with the whole phrase being "tax-exempt professional medical services" - as you say, there is no implication of tax-exempt status in the phrase "heilberufliche Leistungen" alone.
