Subspecialty and added qualifications certification
Subspecialties are areas of further specialization within a specialty area. Pediatric surgery, for example, is a subspecialty of surgery. Many specialty boards—especially ABMS boards—offer subspecialty certificates or \"certificates of added qualifications\" to qualified practitioners. Eligibility for a subspecialty certificate typically requires training beyond what is required for a general specialty certificate, so subspecialty certification signifies a level of training beyond the general board certificate. In many fields, subspecialization is considered desirable for academicians and those practicing in large, highly specialized, tertiary care hospitals.
