This is purely my guess, but I think wachsen an here means to develop spiritually. People in misery need a strong partner, in order to develop together, which means to develop together and strive to get out of that misery.

This seems to be to do with the role-modelling aspect of mentoring, for instance. They grow with them (at the same time as them), but take their cues from the stronger person in a role-modelling sense. Without extending the sentence into something clumsy, that is what I mean by 'growing alongside them'.
