German term

Schleppfahrt

German to English Tech/Engineering Transport / Transportation / Shipping Electric Locomotive
"Die Öldichtigkeit des Fahrmotors wird auch im nicht belüfteten Zustand (z. B. Schleppfahrt) gewährleistet."

Talking about the gearbox of an electric locomotive. The only translation I have been able to find for "Schleppfahrt" is "haul drive", but I'm really not too sure about that. Does anyone know what "Schleppfahrt" would mean in a railway-specific context? TIA for your help.

Discussion

Bernhard Sulzer Nov 4, 2007:
Hi Rowan. I now think it just means the locomotive is being towed, and the motor is not on. Any confirmation of that in the text?
Sabine Akabayov, PhD Nov 4, 2007:
But "Schleppfahrt" doesn't give you a lot of hits as well.
Rowan Morrell (asker) Nov 4, 2007:
So it does But I can't get any good Google hits for "haul drive" in a railway context. I guess "haul drive" will do for now, and maybe it's right, but I'm still not sure about it.
Sabine Akabayov, PhD Nov 4, 2007:
the Leo dictionary has "haul drive" as well and mentions, that it is specially for the railway: http://dict.leo.org/ende?lp=ende&lang=de&searchLoc=0&cmpType...

the general meaning is "when being towed" "during towing" (even though the latter is not grammatically correct)

I don't see why this should not apply to locomotives too; the issue usually is that some parts are not receiving enough or any lubrication/ventilation (here) or brake pressure in that (the towed) state

agree Bernhard Sulzer : Well, I now also think it just means the locomotive is being towed - meaning the motor is not running. see "Schleppfahrt": http://www.lokifahrer.ch/Lokomotiven/SBB-Am_843.htm; "locomotive in tow" : http://trains.rockycrater.org/cfr/49cfr230.php
