Hello all,

I'm looking for the appropriate English term for "Erlebniszoo". The client has defined it for me as follows:

"Ein Zoo, wo der Besucher aktiv mit den Tieren in Kontakt treten kann und sie nicht nur in einem Käfig sieht. Sie füttern und eventuell anfassen kann."

Hi all, thanks very much for all your help! It's a tricky one. I've gone for "wild animal park" in this case, as the links I've found seem to reflect that cageless, free-roaming, feed-and-touch- the-animals type of thing specified in the text. (It wasn't part of the name of a zoo, in this case, I needed a "categorisation". (And I agree, "Adventure Zoo" is horrible in English, not to mention sounding like something Disney would dream up!

The first few hits for "adventure zoo" are from Hanover - so hardly a credible reference. And with all respect: your client is not a native-speaker, right? ;-)

Why do you need a one-for-one translation, Hilary? Any context? So it's about a place that has your usual lions & polar bears - behind bars or at least at a safe distance, I assume - and also incorporating something like a "petting zoo"?

Hello!! No, sorry - this refers to zoos such as Hannover and Hamburg, which aim to provide more than just animals in cages and have free-roaming animals, etc.

I think you may need to get away from the word 'Zoo' as this has an unfortunate, outdated ring to it in English. 'Park' suggests that the animals enjoy better, more natural conditions. Also it hints at the element of 'adventure theme (park)'. By adding 'wild', you also touch on the idea of an 'adventure experience'.
You will no doubt recall all the fun we have had here in past with Erlebnissauna, Erlebnisbrauerei etc, and have run through all the usual suspects in your mind before posting this question.

would appear to be the norm for translation Deu-Eng. Try googling "Hannover Adventure Zoo".

'Hands-on" is often used to describe innovative, interactive programs/exhibits that allow visitors to experience the animals in their natural habitat.

Combining hands-on with "concept/experience/program" might work for your context.
